UKGEOS Cheshire Core Scanning Dataset

A comprehensive core scanning dataset from 17 boreholes drilled onshore at Thornton Science Park, Cheshire, UK as part of the UK Geoenergy Observatories (UKGEOS) Cheshire project funded by UKRI/NERC. The core scanning dataset contains X-ray radiographic images (RAD), geophysical property data (MSCL-S), high-resolution optical images (LS) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) point data using the Core Scanning Facility (CSF) at the British Geological Survey (BGS).

Statement

Approximately 1.7 km of core from 17 boreholes of the UK Geoenergy Observatories (UKGEOS) Cheshire facility were scanned at the Core Scanning Facility (CSF) at the British Geological Survey (BGS). Radiographic images (RAD) using a Geotek rotating computed tomography core scanner (RXCT) and physical property analysis using a Geotek multi-sensor core logger (MSCLS) were collected on whole lined core. Subsequently, the core was slabbed 1/3 to 2/3 by the BGS core store using a specially designed clamping system to allow for asymmetric core slabbing (Monaghan et al., 2021). The core was then taken out of the clamp and let to fully dry out before being scanned for high resolution optical images (LS) and X-ray florescence (XRF) point analysis using a Geotek core workstation. More details available in the Methodology_Lineage_statement document.
