Statement

Sedimentary uranium (U) and thorium (Th) isotopes were measured using approximately 10 mg of dried and homogenised sediment. The sediment was spiked with a 236U- 229Th mixed spike and then totally digested with a mixed HClO4, HF, HNO3 solution in a 0.5:1:2 ratio. U and Th were separated from the matrix using the anion exchange UTEVA resin in a single column step (Nita, 2012). U and Th isotope ratios were measured using sample-standard bracketing on a Neptune Plus multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS) at the St Andrews Isotope Group (STAiG) laboratory, University of St Andrews following the procedure of (Hoffmann et al., 2007).
