Statement

Samples were prepared for X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) to determine clay mineralogy at the Biogéosciences Laboratory, Université Bourgogne/Franche-Comté, Dijon. Clay phases were discriminated following the methods of Moore & Reynolds (1997) and the identification of clay minerals follows the methods of Deconinck et al. (2019). Samples for palynofacies and microcharcoal were prepared at the Physical Geography Laboratory, University of Exeter, Exeter, Devon, UK. The palynological maceration (HCl + HF) technique was applied and the palynofacies were analysed in the unsieved neutralized residue. Microcharcoal was counted in the 10-125 µm residue. Methods follow Belcher et al. (2005). The samples for TOC, CaCO3, and bulk organic carbon isotope mass spectrometry were prepared at the University of Exeter Environmental & Sustainability Institute, stable isotope facility, Penryn, Cornwall, UK.
