Approximate 40 m of core from the Bowland Shale Formation in the Ellesmere Port-1 (1532.7 – 1663.15 m) was scanned for high-resolution optical images and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) downcore point measurements using the Itrax MC core scanner (Cox Analytical Systems) at the Core Scanning Facility (CSF) at the British Geological Survey. Core scanning was utilised as part of the commission phase of this facility. Before core scanning, fragments of the split core were aligned with a levelling tool to ensure optimal alignment of the detector. XRF was measured at 1 cm step-size and 30 s integration time. For each core section, an initial surface scan was performed to compute the trajectory of the XRF detector and to acquire a standard resolution optical image (210 µm per pixel). The Itrax MC core scanner automatically produces an XRF sumspectra for each core section, which was peak-fitted using the processing software Q-Spec version 8.6. A single fitting template has been used to fit the whole core succession. In this software, the mean square error (MSE) indicates the goodness-of-fit of the mathematical model compared to the measured energies. MSE values are shown in the fitted result files and can be used to identify region of poor fit. The XRF elemental data is presented as raw counts (peak area). The raw count data provides an indication of variation in elemental abundances along the core, but is not a quantitative analysis. Elemental intensities of <500 counts should be considered with caution as signals for very low counts are primarily dominated by noise.
