Porosity of core samples SSK111464 and SSK111465 calculated using SEM images and Fiji software (NERC grant NE/R018006/1)
Porosity of core samples SSK111464 (sandstone) and SSK111465 (shale) calculated using backscatter electron SEM images of carbon coated thin sections processed in ImageJ Fiji software. 85 images of SSK111464 (sandstone) used and 74 images of SSK111465 (shale) at various magnifications. Core samples from UKGEOS Glasgow Observatory, borehole GGC01. Samples and data are derived from the UK Geoenergy Observatories Programme funded by the UKRI Natural Environment Research Council and delivered by the British Geological Survey.

Thin sections of core samples prepared using diamond saw, grinding and polishing. Thin sections mounted in epoxy under vacuum then carbon coated. Thin sections imaged using Hitachi S-3500N SEM at the Electron Microscopy Facility in the School of Earth Sciences at the University of Bristol Backscatter Electron images processed in ImageJ Fiji software. Threshold adjusted and Analyse Particles function used. 1st threshold value always 0, 2nd threshold value varied with sample.
