Photographic data from specimens of Ediacaran fossils and sedimentary rocks from Brazil

Three folders of images taken during a field trip to the Corumba region of Brazil, funded by this IRF, along with one publication (Parry et al., 2017) arising from that visit. Photographs in “Ediacaran field sites” document late Ediacaran fossil specimens and sedimentary rocks from Brazil. Ediacaran field sites are filed by individual localities, and lie within the Corumba region of Mato Grosso do Sul state, Brazil. Individual field sites include Ladario, Cacimba, Corcal, Laginha, Porto Morrinhos and Porto Sobramil. Most of these lie within the latest Ediacaran Guaicurus and Tamengo Formations, except Porto Morrinhos, which samples the upper Bocaina Formation and holds a dated tuff horizon, published in Parry et al., 2017. Fossils observed at the former sites include Cloudina, Corumbella, Eoholynia, and meiofaunal trace fossils. “Cryogenian field sites” refer to a section in Rondonia State, at a mine owned by the Companhia de Mineracao de Rondonia. This section includes a glacial diamictite of likely Neoproterozoic age, which has not been documented or studied. “Brazil 2016 candidate burrows” includes lab images of specimens of the alga Eoholynia, and meiofaunal trace fossils, from Laginha Mine. Data result from NERC grant NE/L011409/2 Constraining the origins of the Metazoa: Insights from ichnology, palaeoecology and taphonomy. Photographs were taken to document fossil specimens, and to record new specimens of trace fossils that were the primary focus of the field trip. Statement: Photographs were taken in the field. Specimens largely remain in the field, or were added to the collections of the Department of Earth Sciences, USP, Brazil. Photographs were taken using either a Canon 6D camera, or an Olympus TG-Series camera. Dr Alex Liu, University of Cambridge took all images. The Ediacaran trip was organised by Prof. Juliana Leme and Prof. Paulo Boggiani of the Universidade de Sao Paulo (USP). We were joined in the field by graduate students Luana Morais, and Kleber Diniz. The Cryogenian trip was organised by Milene Figuereido, who accompanied me for that part of the fieldwork.
