Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) Geophysical Survey 1986/2: East Anglia/Flemish Bight (14/10/1986 to 24/10/1986)

This marine geophysical survey took place in October 1986 in the area of East Anglia/Flemish Bight on board the MV Bon Entente. The purpose was to study the type and location of sediments, and their their geological history. The survey used a Atlas Deso 20 echo sounder, an EG&G Model 240 sub-tow boomer, and a EG&G 260 side-scan sonar. Technical details of the survey are contained in BGS Report WB86/53C. Study area report WB/88/9C.

Geophysical equipment types used included: Echo Sounder, Sidescan Sonar and Surface Tow Boomer. British Geological Survey was contracted to undertake the survey on behalf of Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. Data quality throughout the survey was good. The navigation system used was Decca Main Chain. Position fixing was poor throughout the survey due to the instability of the signal. Various filtering and processing was applied - with no significant improvement. The poor quality of the positioning can be seen in the very wiggly appearance of the survey tracks. For more detailed information see the Cruise Report.
