2003 Strategic Environmental Assessment SEA4 Report - Temporal variability in benthic populations from the Faroe-Shetland Channel
This report is a contribution to the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA4) conducted by the Department of Trade and Industry (now Department of Energy and Climate Change) and discusses temporal variability in benthic populations from the Faroe-Shetland Channel. The West of Shetland transect is situated between 60 40 N, 2 15 W; 61 20 N - 2 50 W, to the North and West of the Shetland islands. Statistical analyses was carried out on data collected previously.

The SEAs data were produced as part of the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change's Offshore Energy Strategic Environmental Assessment programme; Crown Copyright, all rights reserved. The DECC SEA must be acknowledged in any maps or publications that make use of the data. All the data files are freely available to the public. The Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) data portal provides free access to available data and reports which have been produced through the SEA process. The site is run and managed by BGS on behalf of the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC). Many files can be downloaded directly from this website. Those that are too large to download can be ordered via the website for postal delivery from BGS. BGS (NERC) has been contracted by DECC to publish SEA datasets on its behalf. All intellectual property rights (including , without limitation, copyrights, database rights and all other rights which subsist or may at any time in the future subsist in the Dataset(s)) in the Dataset(s) ('Intellectual Property Rights') are owned by DECC (formerly the Department of Trade and Industry, and the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform). Report published by Scottish Association for Marine Science as part of the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change's Offshore Energy Strategic Environmental Assessment programme. The West of Shetland transect was initially sampled in 1996 as part of the first Atlantic Frontier Environmental Network (AFEN) cruise (CD 101C). The overall AFEN survey design was based on a random stratified sampling regime, whereas station positions on the West of Shetland transect were pre-determined. The transect was included in the sampling regime in order not to miss any changes in the benthic population that may occur over a short depth gradient. The 15 transect stations are situated along a bathymetric gradient ranging in depth from ~150 m - 1000 m. Between 150 m and 700 m the stations are placed at depth intervals of 50 m, thereafter they are every 100 m. Samples were collected from these 15 stations in 1996, 1998 and 2000 using a day grab, box corer or megacorer. Statistical analyses were performed on these results.
