2001 Strategic Environmental Assessment SEA2 North Sea Survey Leg-2 Cruise Report, (Kommandor Jack)
This report describes fieldwork operations of the North Sea Strategic Environmental Survey, Leg 2 conducted from S/V Kommandor Jack between 05 May and 21 May 2001 as part of the Department of Trade and Industry's (now Department of Energy and Climate Change) Strategic Environmental Assessment SEA2. The survey objectives were to carry out quantitative seabed sampling and seabed photography in three distinct areas: Area 1 - sand bank / wave study areas, off the Norfolk coast; Area 2 - Dogger Bank transects; Area 3 - South Fladen pockmark study areas. Contains brief description of seabed appearance and fauna. 269 samples were collected.

The SEAs data were produced as part of the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change's Offshore Energy Strategic Environmental Assessment programme; Crown Copyright, all rights reserved. The DECC SEA must be acknowledged in any maps or publications that make use of the data. All the data files are freely available to the public. The Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) data portal provides free access to available data and reports which have been produced through the SEA process. The site is run and managed by BGS on behalf of the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC). Many files can be downloaded directly from this website. Those that are too large to download can be ordered via the website for postal delivery from BGS. BGS (NERC) has been contracted by DECC to publish SEA datasets on its behalf. The survey was undertaken by Hartley Anderson Limited as part of the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change's Offshore Energy Strategic Environmental Assessment programme. Quantitative seabed sampling was carried out using a 0.1m2 Van Veen grab in the sandbank/ wave and Dogger Bank areas, and a 0.1m2 Calvert box corer in the pockmark areas. The Van Veen grab was also used for some pockmark biological samples while the Calvert box corer was repaired. Three Van Veen, or two box corer samples were taken from each sample location. Two replicate Van Veen samples, or a single box corer sample (top 10cm only) were processed for macrofaunal analysis by sieving through nested 5mm, 1.0mm and 0.5mm mesh and fixed in 10% formalin. A single sample was sub-sampled for chemical and particle size analysis, with 6cm diameter cores also taken for meiofaunal analysis at selected stations. Redox and temperature were measured in core samples from pockmark areas. The camera frame used was equipped with OE1366 colour video camera, SDS3000 digital stills camera and OE1130 300W light.
