Rock strata and unconsolidated deposits can be classified using BGS 1:50,000 scale DiGMapGB data (or 1:250,000 for those sectors of Wales for which 1:50,000 scale geological data is not availabe) according to their susceptibility to gas seepages. Rock strata and unconsolidated deposits can be classified using BGS 1:50,000 scale DiGMapGB data (or 1:250,000 for those sectors of Wales for which 1:50,000 scale geological data is not availabe) according to their susceptibility to gas seepages as follows: [1] Moderately gas susceptible bedrock sources that contain major coal seams, with enhanced susceptibility where the available evidence suggests the coal seams may have been mined. [2] Moderately gas susceptible superficial deposit sources in which peat is the major constituent. Peat and organic material in buried watercourses, ponds, docks and reservoirs and tidal river sediments can not be identified using 1:50,000 scale DiGMapGB data. [3] Low to moderate gas susceptible bedrock sources that contain minor coal seams, with enhanced susceptibility where the available evidence suggests the coal seams may have been mined. [4] Low to moderate gas susceptibility where Carboniferous rocks are overlain by younger strata. There is a risk of encountering gas in boreholes, underground mining or tunnels intersecting buried (concealed) Carboniferous, Jurassic or younger strata because these are the major gas and oil source and reservoir rocks in Great Britain. The risk is higher in certain structural settings such as structural highs at shallow depth and near faults that intersect Carboniferous strata. In the concealed coalfields, the gas hazard is probably greatest where development takes place above and adjacent to abandoned, imperfectly sealed shafts. [5] Low to moderately gas susceptible superficial deposits in which peat is a relatively minor but potentially significant component. [6] Low to moderate oil susceptible bedrock sources: Devonian Old Red Sandstone oil source rocks of the Moray Firth and Orkney Islands in north east Scotland; Lias black shale source rocks for minor oil seepages in the Wessex Basin (Dorset) and the Wealden Basin (East Sussex); Lower Palaeozoic black shale source rocks for oil (bitumen) impregnations in the Welsh Borderlands (these are currently not identified using DiGMapGB-50 data. [7] Low to moderate carbon dioxide susceptibility from carbonate bedrocks. In certain circumstances, carbon dioxide problems may be associated with carbonate bedrocks that occur at or close to the surface, especially if these come into contact with sulphide rich rocks. [8] Low to moderate gas susceptibility associated with spoil from coal and sulphide mines. [9] Enhanced susceptibility related to: Sandstones in coal mining areas, which act as gas migration pathways; Faults. Major faults affecting outcropping moderately gas susceptible strata and similar strata buried by unconsolidated deposits are potential migration pathways with a higher risk of surface and near-surface gas emissions. Where major Permian or Mesozoic faults affect buried strata, there is a higher risk of intersecting gas in boreholes; Mine shafts and adits, which act as gas migration pathways: comprehensive information on the location of these is currently available only from the Coal Authority; Permeable superficial deposits. [10] Reduced susceptibility related to: Gas source rocks overlain by more than 5 m of superficial deposits; Gas source rocks overlain by impermeable superficial deposits. Hardcopy.
