Murchison House Aerial Photograph And Satellite Image Inventory
This data set is an inventory of aerial photographs held at BGS, Murchison House office and consists of a MS Excel spreadsheet containing 11 worksheets. Each worksheet contains information pertaining to the different sub-collections within the collection (9 worksheets of aerial photographs, one for aerial photograph scans, one for satellite imagery). Quality and coverage of metadata varies from worksheet to worksheet, depending on the size of the sub-collection, its pre-existing organisation, and the way in which the sub-collection was brought together (if it was not a complete entity when the inventory was started). Areal extent ranges from Shetland in the N (1200000) to the southern Lake District in the S (480000) and from Barra in the W (65000) to Stockton-on-Tees in the E (450000). By late 2001 all photos (except those being worked on by cuurently by staff) were catalogued in the inventory spreadsheet. By late 2003, the inventory spreadsheet had been updated with newly purchased and newly discovered photos as well as modified to include details of digital holdings and satellite imagery.

Pre- and post-Second World War RAF aerial photography. All Scotland Survey aerial photography carried out by Scottish Development Department in 1988-89. It is believed that the RAF collection is a complete record of the whole of Scotland, although in practice this collection is little used because of the poor quality of the images (both physically and photographically, e.g. cloud cover). From the two other more recently flown programmes by the OS and ASS we have in our possession patchy coverage of the IGSN area of Scotland and Northern England. Some areas have no coverage while other more recently mapped sheets have complete coverage. Patchy coverage concentrating on recently mapped areas. The 11 subcollections have very different levels of metadata quality and coverage. [1] RCAHMS - RAF. Sortie and Box numbers only (No photo numbers). Photo numbers and flightplans are available in hardcopy. [2] HIGHLAND. Sortie only. Photo numbers available on card index. Flight plans available in filing cabinet with photos. Mostly RAF photography (Scales c. 1:10,000 to 14,000), plus some OS and Coastal Series Obliques. [3] LOWLAND. Sortie only. Photo numbers available on card index. Flight plans available in filing cabinet with photos. Mostly RAF photography (Scales c. 1:10,000 to 14,000). In addition, limited Coastal Colour Strip (Scale 1:10,000) and Coastal Series Obliques flown by Fairey Surveys. [4] MIDLAND VALLEY. Sortie, photo numbers, number of photos, date, flightplan?, area/sheet number, specific area, how stored, notes. OS and ASS. Midland Valley photos only. [5] NE ENGLAND. Sortie, photo numbers, number of photos, date, flightplan?, area/sheet number, how stored?, notes and strip details (if available). Predominantly RAF and OS material. [6] MISCELLANEOUS. Sortie, photo numbers, date, area/sheet number. A mixture of RAF and OS material, but also some All Scotland Survey and National Coal Board (NCB). Wide geographical spread, where known. [7] IGSN NOT IN USE. Name, sortie, photo numbers, number of photos, date, flightplan?, area/sheet number, specific area, how stored, notes. Mainly OS material, but some RAF. Geographically varied. [8] IGSN IN USE. Name, room number, sortie number, photo number, number of photos, date, flightplan?, area/sheet number, specific area, how stored, notes. Mainly OS and ASS (no RAF). Geographically varied. [9] Oversize APs. Sortie, photo number, number of photos, date, flightplan?, size, area/sheet number. OS and ADAS photos. [10] AP Scans. Run, line, sortie, photo number, area, locations of scanned AP files. ASS photos. [11] Satellite Imagery. Source, date acquired, area, colour/B&W, bandwidths, scale, notes. In late 2000 the MH AP collection consisted of a large collection of, often disorganised, sub-collections scattered throughout the building and among different staff members. Although some of the sub-collections were well organised, with detailed photo listings and flightplans (indicating geographical coverage very accurately), others merely hinted at the extent of their areal coverage. Quite a few sub-collections gave no indication of their location at all. The worst examples were loosely jumbled up in black bin bags. By late 2001 all photos (except those being worked on by cuurently by staff) were merged into 4 filing cabinets in MH and catalogued in the inventory spreadsheet. By late 2003, the inventory spreadsheet had been updated with newly purchased and newly discovered photos as well as modified to include details of digital holdings and satellite imagery.
