Aquifer Properties, Database Of Physical Properties Of Aquifers In England And Wales.

Data on the physical properties (transmissivity, storage coefficient, porosity and permeability) of aquifers in England and Wales. Compiled by BGS staff from paper records of field and laboratory testing held by BGS, the Environment Agency and other organisations. Contains summary data on approximately 20,000 pump tests at over 2000 discrete locations. The majority of BGS and EA pump test data is included for both major and minor aquifers, but in minor aquifers this is complemented by data on specific yield. Laboratory determinations of porosity and permeability are limited to open file BGS data only. All data subject to similar processing and interpretation, but raw data highly variable.

Supplemental Information
Date of some data capture may be unknown, but this does not materially affect data validity. Ongoing update of database subject to funding and is project driven. Normally provided to users as a package, with a CD-ROM with a PC based GIS viewer and summarised data. The GIS will produce digital output in several common data interchange formats. Detailed data are avilable in various formats by special arrangement. Density of data in proportion to drilling densities, from 1 per km2 to less than 1 per 100 km2. Statement
The data were compiled from original paper records collected by the EA for abstraction licensing, and by BGS for research. Data were subject to review and were assessed by project staff for completeness and interpretation accuracy. The original data were collated to give 'best' estimates for each parameter in individual boreholes and, where boreholes fell within a 100 metre radius, for groups of boreholes. Only the collated data is normally released.
