Global geomagnetic observatory annual means.

Annual means of the geomagnetic field vector components from observatories around the world, from 1840 to the present day. At present there are about 160 observatories. These data are useful for tracking changes in the magnetic field generated inside the Earth. Data are produced by a number of organisations around the world, including BGS. Data are available in plain text from www.geomag.bgs.ac.uk. This data is connected to other geomagnetic data sets, but can be used without reference to them.

Refer to the BGS staff member responsible for the creation of the dataset if further advice is required. He / she should be familiar with the composition of the dataset, particularly with regard to 3rd party IPR contained in it, and any resultant use restrictions. This staff member should revert to the IPR Section ( ipr@bgs.ac.uk) for advice, should the position not be clear.

Supplemental Information

The first compiliation of observatory annual means was in a publication by Bock & Schumann in 1948. The file is updated when new data are received. Additional Information Sources: ROYAL OBSERVATORY BULLETINS NUMBER 134 ANNUAL VALUES OF GEOMAGNETIC ELEMENTS SINCE 1941 (1967). OBSERVATORY ANNUAL MEANS, BOCK AND SCHUMANN 1948. Various organisations around the World that run magnetic observatories supplied the data.
