IODP Expedition 375 Site U1520 Unit IV fault and stylolite frequency and texture observations (NERC grant NE/S002731/1)
Data are either (1) depths and spacings between stylolites and faults within Unit IV, (2) images from IODP drill core image logs of the locations of samples observed, (3) photomicrographs and flatbed thin section scans of thin sections cut from samples, (4) SEM BSE or EDS data collected at Cardiff University. These data form the basis of: Leah et al. "Brittle-ductile strain localisation and weakening in pelagic sediments seaward of the Hikurangi margin, New Zealand", Tectonics, Submitted. Images and data from samples collected at IODP Expedition 375 Site U1520 (38°58.1532'S, 179°7.9112'E, 3522.1 mbsl). This is just seaward (east) of the trench of the Hikurangi Margin, New Zealand.

(1) stylolite and fault depths are recorded from recovered core image logs collected at Site U1520 during IODP Expedition 375. A qualitative intensity is used to assess the occurrence of a stylolite, faults are characterised as (possibly) recrystallised fractures hosting offset. (2) Images available from IODP Expedition 375 webpage have been drawn over to show the location of collected samples. (3) Photomicrographs collected using transmitted light through thin sections cut perpendicular to bedding or slip lineations on faults. (4) SEM data were collected using a Zeiss Sigma HD Field Emission Gun Analytical SEM at the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences in Cardiff University. For EDS mapping, spot size was either 1.59, 2.49, or 2.66 µm, accelerating voltage was 20 KeV, dwell time was 100 µs, and aperture size was 120 µm.
