Secondary electron backscatter analysis was carried out using the Carl Zeiss SIGMA HD VP Field Emission SEM at the University of Edinburgh . X-ray microtomography was undertaken using an in-house constructed XCT scanner at the University of Edinburgh. Clasts were measured and the X-ray source-sample distance was adapted for each clast to ensure a whole-clast analysis whilst attaining an optimum resolution. Each sample was rotated around 180° and a series of exposures taken. These images were reconstructed and corrected for beam hardening using Octopus v8.7. For qualitative 3D analysis of the internal structure, these images were loaded into Avizo 9 and a threshold was applied.
