Nannofossil biostratigraphy: smear slide quantitative analysis of species abundances using a light microscope. Only 6 samples provided full assemblage information due to poor preservation in the other samples analysed. Carbonate stable isotopes: samples were homogenised and the soluble organic carbon fraction chemically removed, followed by analysis for carbonate-associated oxygen and carbon stable isotopes using a Thermo Delta V Advantage with Gasbench II. % organic carbon/carbonate: an initial run of samples were weighed and total carbon content analysed using a Thermo Delta V Advantage with Flash EA 1112. This was followed by chemical extraction of the soluble organic carbon and then a second analysis run; the difference between runs (minus the organic fraction) was calculated as % weight carbonate.
