Propagator - EPSRC project: Development of Unified Experimental and Theoretical Approach to Predict Reactive Transport in Subsurface Porous Media

EPSRC grant EP/L012227/1: Development of Unified Experimental and Theoretical Approach to Predict Reactive Transport in Subsurface Porous Media. The effect of pore-scale heterogeneity on non-Darcy flow behaviour is investigated by means of direct flow simulations on 3-D images of Estaillades carbonate. The critical Reynolds number indicating the cessation of the creeping Darcy flow regime in Estaillades carbonate is two orders of magnitude smaller than in Bentheimer sandstone, and is three orders of magnitude smaller than in the beadpack. It is inferred from the examination of flow field features that the emergence of steady eddies in pore space of Estaillades at elevated fluid velocities accounts for the early transition away from the Darcy flow regime. Additional information

EPSRC Project: EP/L012227/1 - The package (MATLAB) contains porosity profiles (Profiles_5mpm & Profiles_50mpm), spatially resolved propagators (Props_5mpm & Props_50mpm) and the scales for the different dimensions (Position (cm), PropScales_5mpm & PropScales_50mpm). Profiles are provided at 13 time-points, corresponding to 821 mL increments in acid flowed, starting at 0 mL. Propagators are provided at 12 time-points, corresponding to 821 mL increments in acid flowed, starting at 821 mL. Propagators are probability against dimensionless displacement (i.e. actual displacement divided by expected average displacement. This is obviously a function of the local (space and time) porosity. The local values of porosity have been taken from the profiles. The propagators have been normalised and non-dimensionalised in the following fashion: 1. Raw propagators are individually divided by their sum and subsequently the bin-size in the displacement dimension to produce a PDF (P(æ) x mm-1 Vs æ (mm)). 2. The propagator amplitudes are then multiplied by the expected mean displacement (EMD), where the displacement scale is divided by the EMD. EMD is calculated from the superficial velocity of flow at the two rates through a void the same size as the core and the observation time of 0.25 s. (P(æ) x æ0 Vs æ/ æ0) 3. The propagator amplitudes are divided by the spatially and temporally resolved values for porosity (ösr)– the porosity profiles. The transport scale is now multiplied by the same values of porosity to complete the non-dimensionalisation with respect to porosity and spatial position. ((P(æ) x æ0)/ ösrVs (æ x ösr)/ æ0)
