Isotope data were generated on a Thermo-Finnigan Kiel device coupled to a Thermo-Finnigan MAT253 mass spectrometer at the University of Southampton. Neodymium isotopes were generated on Oligocene samples using the sieved <38 µm fraction of marine sediments from Site 689 at Imperial College London, and on bulk (not sieved) sediment samples from Eocene to Oligocene sections of ODP Sites 689 and 690 at the University of South Carolina.
