Laser ablation inductively-coupled mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) analysis of manganese nodules from the Ocean Minerals Company (OMCO) 1979 test mining site in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone of the Central Pacific Ocean (Expedition JC241 in 2023)

This dataset contains the results of laser ablation inductively-coupled mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) analysis of deep-sea ferromanganese nodules. The results, provided in a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, are for nodules collected as part of the Seabed Mining And Resilience To EXperimental impact (SMARTEX) Highlight Topic project funded by the UK Natural Environment Research Council (Grant References NE/T003537/1 and NE/T002883/1) alongside other partner institutions in the project. These high resolution and in-situ analyses were performed as time series LA-ICP-MS line scans across full, or half transects of selected nodules previously imaged by the scanning electron microscope (SEM) and data is displayed for 34 elements. Separate datasets associated with the same project cover porewater geochemistry, the geochemistry and mineralogy of sediment, and physical property analysis of sediment to model the physical and temporal responses of deep-sea sediment to the compression caused by a deep-sea mining vessel. The samples were collected as part of Expedition JC241 2023 in the Ocean Minerals Company (OMCO) test mining site in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone of the Central Pacific Ocean. Statement

During deployment of biology boxcores on JC241, nodules were collected. After these nodules had been checked for fauna/biota by the biologists, they were washed to reduce salt build up, set out to dry, photographed in trays and bagged up in bulk bags by station number. They were then sealed. Selected well preserved nodules were cut and prepared in thin section at the BGS and analysed by SEM to produce an image map for planning line transects across entire nodules. Time series line transects by LA-ICPMS was performed in the BGS Inorganic Laboratories and data reduced by the Iolite software program.
