Physical property model data for the response of deep-sea sediment to the 1979 test mining disturbance at the Ocean Minerals Company (OMCO) mining site in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone of the Central Pacific Ocean (Expedition JC241 in 2023)

This dataset consists of the data generated from the physical property analysis of sediment to model the physical and temporal response of deep-sea sediment to the compression caused by a deep-sea mining vessel. The results were generated from seafloor sediment samples collected as part of the Seabed Mining And Resilience To EXperimental impact (SMARTEX) Highlight Topic project funded by the UK Natural Environment Research Council (Grant References NE/T003537/1 and NE/T002883/1) alongside other partner institutions in the project. The tests were conducted to evaluate the consolidation behaviour, compressibility, and void ratio evolution of the material under controlled laboratory conditions representative of the expected in-situ response. The dataset consists of two one-dimensional consolidation experiments conducted on frozen seafloor sediment using an automated oedometer apparatus in the Soil Testing Laboratory at the British Geological Survey, Keyworth, UK. The results are provided in Microsoft Excel csv spreadsheets and have an accompanying data report detailing the methodology and csv outputs. Additional related datasets associated with this project are [1] porewaters extracted for trace metals, nutrients and alkalinity and sediments analysed for trace element geochemistry, loss on drying, particle size analysis and bulk and clay mineralogy by XRD and [2] laser ablation ICP-MS line transects performed across selected entire manganese nodules for high resolution, in-situ geochemical analysis. The samples were collected as part of Expedition JC241 2023 in the Ocean Minerals Company (OMCO) test mining site in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone of the Central Pacific Ocean. Statement

Deep-sea sediment samples were collected from megacores (max 60 cm). The megacores were wireline deployed over the side of the vessel. Extruded slices of megacore and one entire megacore was collected for physical properties analysis to model the physical and temporal response of deep-sea sediment to the compression caused by a deep-sea mining vessel by incremental axial loading and unloading under one-dimensional drainage conditions. For each loading stage prior to unloading, time-deformation data were analysed using the time-deformation curve from log of time method to determine the coefficient of consolidation. In addition, the void ratio and coefficient of volume compressibility were determined for each loading increment.
