The data were collected to investigate the effects of two methods for processing and quantifying SCF in the lab to provide a direct comparison of the available methodological approaches for SCF preparation and quantification in palaeoecological studies. The first subset was prepared following the standard pollen preparation (K. Fægri et al., 1989), with acetolysis. This subset was counted to a 300-pollen-grain standard (K. Fægri et al., 1989; Bennett and Willis, 2001). The second followed a modification of K. Fægri et al. (1989), without acetolysis (Pym et al., 2023). Fungal spores were identified using a Zeiss Axioskop light microscope at 400×, 600×, and 1000× magnification. The subset without acetolysis was counted until reaching a minimum of 400 Lycopodium (Etienne and Jouffroy-Bapicot, 2014). Both spore records were quantified as a percentage of the total pollen sum, concentration of Lycopodium and accumulation rate and compared.
