Characterisation of by-product materials from the Mogalakwena Platinum Mine, South Africa

Data characterising the composition of mine by-product materials. Samples were taken from 2 mines; a Platinum mine north of Mokopane, Limpopo Province, South Africa and Smelter operations near Polokwane, Limpopo Province, South Africa. Data consists of: Particle size analysis (by dry sieving or laser analysis, as appropriate) X-ray diffraction determination of mineralogy of mine tailings materials. Whole rock geochemistry determined by XRF, with total carbon, total organic carbon, total inorganic carbon and total sulfur determined using a LECO elemental analyser. Samples were collected in the field 18-22 February 2019, sample size characterisation and XRD analysis were carried out in May 2019 and geochemical analyses were conducted June-August 2019. Statement

Quantitative x-ray diffraction (XRD) was performed on tailings samples to determine individual mineralogical and compositional phases. The finely-powdered (<70 μm) samples were scanned on a Bruker General Area Detector Diffraction System at the University of Southampton, using CuKα radiation and a scan range from 5 to 90° (2 Theta), a 0.03° (2 Theta) step size and a data collection time of 10 s per step. Major element analysis of all samples was determined by x-ray fluorescence (XRF) using a using the PANalytical AXIOS Max wavelength dispersive instrument at the University of Plymouth. Loss on ignition (LOI) was independently calculated as a quality control for the fusion method using an initial sample weight and heating to 1050 °C for 1 hour. LOI was calculated using equation: LoI (%) = (Ws - WA)/(Ws - Wc) x 100, where Ws = Crucible + sample dried at 105°C (g), WA = Crucible + ignited sample (g) and Wc = Preconditoned crucible (g). Total carbon (TC), total organic carbon (TOC), total inorganic carbon (TIC) and sulphur (S) contents of tailings and slags were measured using a LECO CS225 elemental analyser at the University of Aberdeen. The median grain size and grain size distribution (GSD) was measured using dry sieving techniques (for the coarser slag samples), and by laser grain-size analysis (for all fine tailings). Sieve pan sizes range from <63 µm to ≥4750 µm. Fine tailings samples were measured to a high precision using a Malvern Mastersizer 3000 laser diffraction particle size analyser at the University of Southampton.
