Photosimulations and three-dimensional surface reconstructions of grey wolf teeth used for dental microwear texture analysis from Late Pleistocene Britain

This dataset consists of 33 PNG image files, one for each grey wolf (Canis lupus) tooth included in the Burtt et al. study "Rapid response: dietary shifts by grey wolves in response to palaeoclimatic variations during the last glaciation". Each PNG file contains two panels: a greyscale photosimulation of the analysed occlusal enamel surface and a colour-rendered three-dimensional (3D) surface reconstruction of the same scanned area. The images document the occlusal wear facets from which dental microwear texture analysis (DMTA) data were collected and are identified by museum specimen catalogue number. These files provide a permanent visual record of the analysed surfaces and complement the archived quantitative DMTA dataset deposited separately.

Statement

Original tooth enamel surfaces were cleaned, moulded using polyvinylsiloxane dental impression material (President The Original: Regular Body, Coltene-Whaledent), and replicated in high-resolution epoxy resin (Epotek 301) following established dental microwear texture analysis (DMTA) protocols. Epoxy casts were scanned using a Sensofar S neox confocal optical profiler to produce three-dimensional surface models of the occlusal wear facets. Surface models were processed in MountainsMap Imaging Topography (Version 10, Digital Surf) to generate the greyscale photosimulations and colour-rendered 3D surface reconstructions contained in this dataset. Full details of specimen preparation, scanning, image processing, and analytical methods are provided in the associated publication.
