Triaxial deformation experiment datafiles to test two methods of measuring yield strength of porous mudstones and sandstones

The datafiles are text files that record the pore fluid pressure, confining pressure, pore volume change, axial force and axial load displacement recorded on the triaxial deformation apparatus during an axial load cycle on a porous rock sample. Each data file represents an individual load cycle from the contact of the loading apparatus to the yield strength, as identified by the user during the experiment. Samples tested included members of the Idaho Gray Sandstone, Mercia Mudstone Group, and lab manufactured synthetic sandstones. The data is associated with submission of the manuscript: 'Porous rock yield strength mapping: single sample probing versus multi-sample conventional measurements.' to the journal Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering.

Statement

Data were collected in the Rock Deformation Laboratory at the University of Liverpool. The data on the Idaho Gray Sandstone were collected by Dr. J. Bedford between Mar 2017-Apr 2018. The data on the synthectic sandstones was conducted by Dr. E. Rice-Birchall between Jun 2019-Aug 2020. Finally, the Mercia Mudstone Group data were collected by Dr. I. Ashman in Jan & Feb 2026. The Idaho Gray Sandstones were investigated in Dr. John Bedford's PhD project and has been previously published in the Journal of Geophysical Research (Bedford et al., 2019). Similarly, the synthetic sandstone research project was included in Dr. Elliot Rice-Birchall's PhD and has been previously published in the International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences (Rice-Birchall et al., 2021). The Mercia Mudstone Group samples and data form part of NERC and NWS jointly funded GeoSafe consortium.
