Raman spectra indicate CaCO3 polymorph and the full width half maxima of the Raman v1band is increased by disorder around the carbonate group in the CaCO3 lattice. Fossil samples were collected during IODP 389 (2023) and during pre-expedition sampling by submersible (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.gca.2007.07.026). Data were collected to research the formation conditions (pH and dissolved inorganic carbon) of secondary cements in fossil coral skeletons and to calculate the effect of cement inclusion on analyses of primary coral. Secondary ion mass spectrometry analyses were made using a Cameca 7f at the NERC Ion Microprobe Facility (University of Edinburgh) measuring 10B, 11B and Ca (award IMF774/0425). Raman spectra were collected using a Renishaw In-ViaTM QontorTM Raman microscope using a NIR 300 mW 785 nm solid state laser set at 5% full power and with a 1200 1/mm grating. The full width half maxima (FWHM) of the v1 band in the aragonite spectrum was used to indicate disorder around the carbonate group in the mineral lattice. The FWHM was estimated by fitting the v1 band between 1060 and 1120 wavenumbers with a Voigt fit using the software Origin 2026. Additional spectra were collected from standard aragonite and calcite materials.
