UKGEOS Cheshire - TH0422 Borehole Information Pack

The borehole information pack from borehole TH0422 at the UK Geoenergy Observatories (UKGEOS) facility at Thornton Science Park in Cheshire. This release from the British Geological Survey (BGS) contains borehole data collected during the construction of the observatory during 2022 and 2023, as well as data subsequently collected on the recovered core. Details of the borehole design, including details of installed instrumentation, are also included. The following data are included in the datapack: - a borehole schematic, - borehole metadata, - geophysical wireline logs, - a sedimentary log of core obtained from the borehole, - a discontinuity log of core obtained from the borehole, - a graphic log incorporating wireline data and the logging data, - the depths of electrodes installed as part of the PRIME ERT (electrical resistivity tomography) system in the borehole. The following data from the BGS Core Scanning Facility for this borehole are provided separately in the UKGEOS Cheshire Core Scanning Dataset ( https://doi.org/10.5285/f22452ce-78a0-4e34-ada8-3a23baf1af3f): - x-ray radiographic images (RAD) - geophysical property data (MSCL-S) - high-resolution optical images (LS) - x-ray fluorescence (XRF)

Statement

Sedimentary and discontinuity logging was undertaken by BGS geologists working on the collected core in conjunction with the digital wireline geophysics and core scanning data. Sedimentary logging was undertaken to the standards set out in: Tucker, M.E. 1996. Sedimentary Rocks in the Field, 2nd edition. The Geological Field Guide Series. John Wiley & Sons Ltd. The facies scheme was taken from: Miall, A.D. 2014. The Facies and Architecture of Fluvial Systems, in Miall, R., ed., Fluvial Depositional Systems. Springer International Publishing. PP 9 – 68. https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-319-00666-6. Discontinuity logging was based on the standards set out in: International society for rock mechanics commission on standardization of laboratory and field tests: Suggested methods for the quantitative description of discontinuities in rock masses, International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences & Geomechanics Abstracts, Volume 15, Issue 6, 1978, Pages 319-368, https://doi.org/10.1016/0148-9062 (78)91472-9. Digital wireline data were collected on behalf of BGS by an external contractor, and have been appraised and processed by BGS. ASCII LAS files have been standardised by BGS. Metadata relating to the borehole, including accurate borehole locations and datum measurements, were collected on-site using standard techniques.
