Bulk rock geochemical analyses of rock and soil samples from the Sokli carbonatite, Finland (2024 - 2025)

This dataset contains bulk rock geochemical analyses of rock and soil samples from the Sokli carbonatite complex in northern Finland, generated as part of the SCREED: Supergene enrichment of carbonatite-hosted rare earth element (REE) deposits project. Full sample locations and descriptions are available at https://doi.org/10.5285/83819b57-4754-4da3-9336-955e817573ed. Samples were analysed between September 2024 and October 2025 to determine the chemical change on weathering, and the degree of enrichment of the REE relative to bedrock concentrations. The analysis were carried out by research teams from the School of Applied Sciences, University of Brighton .

Statement

Bulk rock or soil samples were crushed either using a ball mill, or agate pestle and mortar. Approximately 1g of sample as weighed accurately and then heated to 550°C to determine loss on ignition. Then 0.1g was fused with 0.4g lithium borate flux in a Fluxana induction furnace, and the resulting glass dissolved in 100ml 10% nitric acid, and then diluted to 2% nitric acid for analysis. Solution analyses were conducted using an Agilent 7900 ICP-MS at the University of Brighton, using online addition of 100ug/L rhenium solution as internal standard. The data was calibrated against calibration curves constructed with a calibration blank and Agilent multi-element standards diluted to different concentrations. The relative standard deviation was <10% for all elements analysed.
