Palynology: standard palynological and organic geochemical procedures of the Laboratory of Paleobotany and Palynology of Utrecht University, the G-MOL Laboratory (Glasgow University) and Marine Microbiology and Biogeochemistry, NIOZ were used to process samples for palynology and organic geochemistry. See the supplementaries of Pross et al (2012) and Bijl et al (2013) for extensive details on the sample work up, analytical methods and data processing.
