Point Load Test (PLT) data on salt samples from the Northwich Halite Member

The dataset contains point load test data of salt samples collected from the Northwich Halite Member at the Winsford Mine in Cheshire, UK. Each sample was tested in an unconfined state using a point load testing apparatus, in which compressive force was applied through two opposing conical platens until failure occurred. All tests were conducted in the Rock Mechanics and Physics Laboratory at the British Geological Survey, Keyworth, UK. The dataset is compiled into a single Microsoft Excel file, with each row representing an individual test. For each test, measurements of sample length, diameter, and peak load are provided, along with calculated point load strength indices and estimates of unconfined compressive strength.

Statement

The samples were tested in a point load apparatus at the Rock Mechanics and Physics Laboratory at the British Geological Survey in Keyworth, UK. Each sample, prepared as a right circular disc, was positioned between two spherically truncated conical platens and loaded at a controlled rate to ensure failure occurred within 10–60 seconds, following ISRM (2007) and ASTM D5731 (2016) suggested methods for axial loading of disc-shaped samples. Peak loads were used to calculate point load strength indices and size-corrected values. UCS estimates were derived using empirical conversion factors. Full results are provided in the accompanying Excel file.
