Legacy BGS geothermal models: isopach map for the Permian sedimentary aquifers in the Cheshire (Collyhurst Sandstone Formation) and Worcester (Bridgnorth Sandstone Formation) basins
This raster dataset represents the modelled thickness in metres of the Permian and lower Triassic sandstones in the Cheshire (Collyhurst Sandstone Formation, CS) and Worcester (Bridgnorth Sandstone Formation, BS) basins, considered for their hot sedimentary aquifer geothermal resource potential. Isopach maps for the other Permo-Triassic basins (Eastern England and Wessex) are not considered as a viable geothermal resource because of the limited porosity and transmissivity of the reservoirs, and were not modelled. The maps are provided in raster format at a 100 m resolution.

These isopach maps were developed as part of the assessment of the geothermal resources of Permo-Triassic basins in England, published by Rollin, K. E., G. A. Kirby, and W. J. Rowley. Atlas of geothermal resources in Europe: UK revision. British Geological Survey, Regional Geophysics Group, 1995. Depth maps of relevant horizons taken from the Atlas of Onshore Sedimentary Basins (Whittaker et al., 1985) and revised where new data had become available since their production (e.g. detailed seismic interpretations) were used to provide and refine the main geological and structural models. The 1995 digital grids of the thickness of the main aquifers were generated using the Interactive Surface Modelling (ISM) package, integrating both vertical and non-vertical faults identified in the seismic data. Grids were calculated at a 1000 m square node spacing and gridded at 200 x 250 m for the Cheshire Basin, providing the depth as a positive value below Ordnance Datum. The isopach map for the Cheshire Basin has been modified in the SE relative to the one published in Rollin et al. (1995). The maps for each basin were merged into a single layer as part of the 2025 UK Geothermal Platform project.
