Surface and Meteorological Data of Protodune Dynamics at Helga's Interdune Area, Gobabeb, Namib Desert, Namibia, 12th September 2023

This dataset includes raw point cloud data from repeat terrestrial laser scans (TLS) for early-stage protodunes migrating and eroding on a gravel surface in the Helga's Interdune Area, Gobabeb, Namib Desert, Namibia. As well as the TLS data, additional nearby measurements of the wind speed through a CSAT 3D sonic anemometer and sediment transport using a Sensit along with sediment trap data downwind of the focus protodune.

Statement

Leica P50 TLS was used to collect the topographic measurements. The scan resolution varied between 0.8 and 3.1 mm at 10 m. The local coordinate system has been orientated to the wind direction. The dataset has been extracted in 7 boxes to make the data manageable and details of the coordinates for each box are included in the dataset. Main scans focused on box 1 with occasional scans of the whole area. Details on the specific scan times and resolutions for each TLS are included in the dataset. The CSAT 3D sonic anemometer was positioned 0.24 m above the surface, approximately 560 m southwest of the scanned area. The Sensit was positioned at the ground surface. Bagnold style sediment traps were placed alongside or directly downwind of the focus protodune during the measurement period. See Delorme et al.
