Elemental abundances of metals were obtained from Australian Laboratory Services, where samples were analysed by ICP-MS and ICP-OES following bulk digestion. Ammonium concentrations in pore waters were measured by UV-VIS spectrophotometry at St Andrews. For isotope measurements of ammonium, a microdiffusion method was used to trap the dissolved ammonium on fibre glass filters, which were then analysed by the same EA-IRMS setup as solid sediment samples.
