Data from the Sinemurian-Pliensbachian boundary charcoal, clay, c-isotopes and palynofacies, Mochras core, NW Wales, UK

This dataset spans the Sinemurian-Pliensbachian boundary of the Llanbedr (Mochras Farm) drill core that was drilled onshore in the Cardigan Bay Basin, Wales, UK. This dataset contains 1. Micro-, macro-charcoal data and palynofacies, obtained at the University of Exeter (Streatham campus), UK, 2. Clay mineralogical data (X-ray diffraction (XRD)) obtained at the University of Burgundy, France, in collaboration with Jean-François Deconinck, 3. Carbon-isotope data, TOC and carbonate content, obtained at the University of Exeter (Penryn campus), UK. The dataset was created within the scope of the JET project (Integrated understanding of Early Jurassic Earth system and timescale) - https://gtr.ukri.org/projects?ref=NE%2FN018508%2F This project has received funding from the International Continental Scientific Drilling Programme (ICDP) and the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). The PhD-project within this dataset was created is funded by the University of Exeter, UK.

Statement

Powdered bulk rock samples were decarbonated and after neutralization run for mass spectrometry using the Sercon Integra 2 stable isotope analyser. Samples were run alongside in-house reference material (bovine liver: δ13C −28.61; alanine: δ13C −19.62) which was used to correct for instrument drift and to determine the δ13C values of the samples. Powdered bulk rock was decarbonated and the clay sized fraction (<2 µm) was extracted and XRD analysis performed using a Bruker D4 Endeavour diffractometer (Bruker, Billerica, MA, USA) with Cu Kα radiations, LynxEye detector, and Ni filter under 40 kV voltage and 25 mA intensity (Biogéosciences Laboratory, Université Bourgogne/Franche-Comté, Dijon). Charcoal and palynofacies were obtained with standard palynological maceration (HCl + HF) for which breakage of the particles was minimized. More details: https://doi.org/10.5194/cp-19-979-2023
