Geological Maps of Ireland (including Northern Ireland pre-1922)

A collection of 1:63 360 and 1:10 560 geological maps of Ireland. The maps were firstly created by the Geological Survey of the United Kingdom and Ireland up until 1905 when the Geological Survey of Ireland was transferred to the Department of Agriculture and Technical Instruction for Ireland. Following this point, the maps were created and published by the Geological Survey of Great Britain (later to become the British Geological Survey). The maps range from 1853 to 1953. Geological maps represent a geologist's compiled interpretation of the geology of an area. A geologist will consider the data available at the time, including measurements and observations collected during field campaigns, as well as their knowledge of geological processes and the geological context to create a model of the geology of an area. This model is then fitted to a topographic base map and drawn up at the appropriate scale, with generalization if necessary, to create a geological map, which is a representation of the geological model. Explanatory notes and vertical and horizontal cross-sections may be published with the map. Geological maps may be created to show various aspects of the geology, or themes. These maps are hard-copy paper records stored in the National Geoscience Data Centre (NGDC) and are delivered as digital scans through the BGS website.

Supplemental Information

The series included in the collection are: Geological Survey of Ireland 1:63 360 geological map series: The main Geological Survey map series for Ireland. There were 205 map sheets in the series, and many sheets were issued in more than one edition. Sheets were issued in Solid or Solid with Drift editions. Maps were issued 1853-1963. Geological Survey of Ireland 1:63 360 geological map drift series: A small number of Drift sheets were published during the period, mostly around the main cities, Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Belfast and Londonderry. Maps were issued 1902-1922. Geological Survey of Ireland 1:10 560 geological map series: A few maps were published at six inches to one mile. They have been included for completeness. Maps were issued 1874-1877. Geological Survey of the United Kingdom (Great Britain & Ireland) period only. Geological Survey of Ireland. Miscellaneous sheets: A few miscellaneous hand-coloured sheets were issued, such as for the Ovoca mine map in Wicklow. Maps were issued 1859-1902.

Statement

The paper maps were created by firstly by the Geological Survey of the United Kingdom and Ireland up until 1905 and then by the Geological Survey of Great Britain. The maps publication dates range from 1853-1953. The paper maps were scanned to TIF image format at 300 dpi as part a scanning project from c. 2000 to the present day. JPEG2000 and PDF derivatives were created from the master TIF scans.
