Data from the Global Partnerships Seedcorn Fund project: WREED Weathering and secondary processes in the development of carbonatite-hosted REE-resources (NERC Grant NE/V008935/1)
Analyses of archive rock and soil samples from the Mushgai Khudug (Mongolia), Dalucao, Miaoya and Lizhuang (China) rare earth element deposits. Data characterise mineralogy, bulk rock geochemistry and sequential leaching experiments on laterite, weathered rock and soil overlying carbonatite related REE deposits. The data was collected to determine enrichment and depletion of the REE relative to bedrock, the mineral host of REE and the ease of extraction.

Sample mineralogy was determined by X-ray diffraction and Scanning Electron microscopy (backscattered electron imaging and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry). Reconnaissance geochemistry was analysed by PXRF. Bulk rock geochemistry by lithium metaborate fusion, nitric acid digestion followed by ICP-MS. Mineral host and leaching behaviour of the REE was determined using a procedure modified from the BCR701 standard sequential extraction methodology. The sequence of extractants was acetic acid (for reactive carbonate hosted), ammonium sulphate solution (for ion exchangable clay hosted), hydrogen peroxide/ammonium acetate (for oxidisable sulphide and organic matter hosted), hydroxylammonium chloride (for reducible oxide hosted). All leachates where analysed using ICP-MS.
