Carbonatite-derived, carbonate-bearing fluorapatite compositions from Kovdor, Sokli, Bukusu, Catalao II, and Glenover (NERC Grant NE/R013403/1)

Mineralogical data relating to carbonate-bearing fluorapatite from the Bukusu, Catalao II, Sokli, Kovdor and Glenover carboantite complexes. Report on the data is here: Broom-Fendley, S., Siegfried, P.R., Wall, F. et al. The origin and composition of carbonatite-derived carbonate-bearing fluorapatite deposits. Miner Deposita 56, 863-884 (2021). https://doi.org/10.1007/s00126-020-01010-7.

Statement

Details of the methodology are present here: https://doi.org/10.1007/s00126-020-01010-7. In summary: Electron probe micro analyses (EPMA) were undertaken using a JEOL JXA 8200 instrument, operated with a 10 nA, 15 kV beam defocussed to a 5-?m spot. Trace elements were analysed using LA-ICP-MS, with a 100 ?m spot, coupled to an Agilent 7500c ICP-MS operating in reaction mode, with a flow rate of 2.5 ml min?1 H2. Ablation at Camborne School of Mines utilised a New Wave Research 213 nm laser coupled to an Agilent 7700 ICP-MS. Median Ca concentrations were used as the internal standard composition and NIST SRM 610 was used for calibration. Infrared spectra were collected for polished surfaces using a ThermoNicolet i10 FTIR spectrometer fitted with a Ge-tipped attenuated total reflectance head, housed at the University of Bristol. Keywords: Apatite, carbonatite Begin date: 01/10/2018 End date: 01/10/2020 Geographical extent: Samples BM1993, P7 15-17 are from the Loiso area, Sokli, Finland. Exact location unknown. Samples SoS_10-12 are from the apatite-francolite quarry, ~500 m south of the Zheleznyi Fe mine, Kovdor, Russia. Exact location unknown. MR32594 is from the southern area of the Bukusu carbonatite, west of Busumbu, Uganda. Exact location unknown. HTAC_100 is from the mine dumps at Glenover, South Africa. Exact location unknown. BRR1 is from the Catalao II phosphate pit, Brazil Exact location unknown.
